How
do Implants work?
Dental implants are placed into a hole in the bone which is constructed
by specialised dental surgeons. Once this is done, the bone grows closely
around the implant, holding it tightly in placed.
How long do I have to wait before the teeth are fitted?
How long you have to wait is dependant on the number of teeth to be replaced,
and in which jaw the replacements are taking place.
In some cases it can take upto 9 months before the final crown is placed.
I have full dentures and my lower one is loose, could I use implants
to help support my denture?
Implants may be used to support for dentures or bridges. This is often
done to support lower dentures which may be loose due to inadequate bone
to support them. Sufficient support is often gained from the placement
of 2 implants, which can be used to provide stability to a lower denture.
What
is the success rate of implants?
Recent studies has shown that the success rates of implants are 95% in
the lower jaw, and 90% in the upper jaw.
The success rate is higher in the lower jaw, since the lower jaw is usually
more dense and solid than the upper jaw.
The success rate varies depending on the type of construction placed over
the implants. As a general rule, single tooth replacements are more successful
than multiple teeth replacements.
Who are implants suitable for?
Whether implants are suitable for you will depend on a number fo factors.
However, there are a number of medical conditions which contraindicate
the use of implants.
Implants are not advisable for smokers.
