Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the inside of the tooth — particularly the dental pulp, nerves, and surrounding tissues.

When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can cause severe discomfort and may threaten the long-term health of the tooth. Endodontic treatment, more commonly known as root canal therapy, is designed to save teeth that might otherwise need to be removed.

When Is Endodontic Treatment Needed?

The pulp of a tooth can become damaged for several reasons, including:

  • Deep decay or untreated cavities.
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth.
  • Cracks or fractures in the tooth.
  • Trauma or injury.
  • Long-standing infection or abscess.

If left untreated, pulp infection can spread and lead to swelling, persistent pain, or even tooth loss.

Common Symptoms of Root Canal Treatment

You may require endodontic treatment if you experience:

  • Severe toothache, especially when chewing.
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums.
  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth.
  • A recurring abscess or pimple on the gum.

It’s important to seek dental care quickly if you notice any of these signs.

What Does Endodontic Treatment Involve?

At Parmar Dental, we carry out endodontic treatment with the aim of saving your natural tooth wherever possible. The procedure typically involves:

  1. Diagnosis – Using digital X-rays and clinical examination to assess the extent of the infection.
  2. Cleaning the Root Canals – The infected pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and shaped.
  3. Sealing the Tooth – The root canals are filled with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection.
  4. Restoration – A crown or filling is placed to strengthen and protect the treated tooth.

The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic for comfort, and most patients are able to return to their normal routine the same day.

Benefits of Endodontic Care

  • Relief from dental pain and infection.
  • Preservation of your natural tooth.
  • Prevention of the spread of infection.
  • Restored ability to chew and bite comfortably.

Looking After Your Treated Tooth

After endodontic treatment, it is important to maintain excellent oral hygiene and attend regular check-ups. With the right care, a root canal-treated tooth can last for many years.
